Molyon raises $4.5M to develop sustainable lithium-sulfur batteries

Molyon, a Cambridge-based battery technology startup, has raised €4.3 million in its first funding round to develop next-generation lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. The funding was co-led by IQ Capital and Plural, with the aim of scaling operations at Molyon’s pilot facility in Cambridge. The investment will support the expansion of Molyon’s team, which includes battery engineers, material scientists, and operational staff, as the company works to commercialise its groundbreaking battery technology.

Founded in 2024, Molyon specialises in Li-S batteries that utilize abundant materials, offering a sustainable alternative to the widely used lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. While Li-ion batteries dominate the market, they face limitations in energy density and rely on critical materials like nickel, manganese, and cobalt, which are subject to supply chain issues. In contrast, Molyon’s Li-S batteries promise higher energy density and longer ranges by using readily available sulfur, making them a more stable and eco-friendly solution for energy storage.

The development of Molyon’s Li-S batteries addresses a key challenge in battery technology: the instability of sulfur, which often degrades and leads to battery failure after limited cycles. Molyon has overcome this issue through a proprietary cathode technology based on molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂), which stabilises sulfur and allows for reliable performance over hundreds of cycles. This innovation marks a significant step forward in battery technology and positions Molyon as a leader in the development of sustainable energy solutions.

The company’s technology is the result of 15 years of research by Molyon’s founding team within the Chhowalla Group at the University of Cambridge. Dr. Sami and Dr. Zhuangnan Li, Molyon’s CTO, were instrumental in developing this innovative approach. Their combined expertise in materials science and battery technology has set the foundation for a new generation of energy storage solutions.

The initial applications for Molyon’s Li-S batteries will focus on drones and robotics, sectors that will benefit from the lighter weight and increased range of the technology. In the longer term, the company aims to expand into the electric vehicle (EV) market, where its batteries have the potential to double driving ranges, offering a compelling advantage over existing technologies.
